Purpose and Content of the MA Programme

The European Union-Russian Studies MA-programme (EURUS) is a unique multidisciplinary programme combining different disciplines such as political science, (comparative politics, international relations) economics, law, history and cultural studies.

The programme integrates not only different disciplines but it also binds together the study of two main regions in one coherent curriculum, giving a comprehensive understanding about the political, social and economic developments in the European Union and its member states as well as in Russia and its neighbouring countries in Eastern Europe and in the Caucasus (Belarus, Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan). The Master programme EURUS hence focuses on the understanding of the development of and the relationship between the EU, being a political and an economic entity "sui generic" on the one hand, and the Russian Federation on the other hand, including Russia's close neighbours to the West and to the South mostly aiming at accession and full membership in the European Union.

After gaining your MA degree from the EURUS programme, both public and private sector job offers are open for graduates. Expertise in both EU policy making and Russian politics, combined with in depth historical analysis, supports the graduates in thier career development and excellent future prospects. Those interested in further research are also eligible for proceeding to PhD studies.
 
 

What does EURUS offer?

 
- Thorough, comprehensive and up-to-date knowledge of policies and politics, of economics, law, and history of the European Union and the Russian Federation.
- Academic qualification for successfully taking up challenging tasks in dealing with the EU, Russia and their mutual relations
- Professional competence for advancing political, commercial, and cultural dimensions shaping the future development of the European Union and the Russian Federation. 
- Two specialization modules, which deepens the knowledge about the European Union policies and politics or Russian social and political developments.
- Knowledge of a foreign language (Russian or one of the European languages) is needed for a chosen field of future professional employment, voluntary internship in a governmental institution, private enterprise or non-governmental organisation.
- Interactive and innovative teaching and strong individual tutoring during the study process, is combined with a broad range of qualified supervisors from different study disciplines.
- Multicultural classroom and international faculty members with specially designed study methods. 
Lot of study-related outside class activities, e.g. film series, study trips, public lectures etc.

The European Union and the Russian Federation are geo­­graphically close, direct neigh­bours in Eurasia, and both play a significant and increasingly visible role in today’s global politics and economics.
Given the great potential for develop­ment and mutual co-operation between the EU and Russia, there is an increasing necessity to educate specialists with an excellent knowledge and great compe­tence in the EU and/or Russia.

Curriculum structure:

 
EURUS is designed as a comprehensive two-year's programme; the study curriculum requires from each participating student during the time of four semesters to earn at least 120 ECTS. The curriculum consists of compulsory courses, selective courses modules and MA thesis.
 
  • Compulsory courses module (42 ECTS) builds a strong theoretical basis for understanding different disciplines combined in the programme and also trains the student's academic writing skills and introduces research methods. It provides comprehensive approaches on the general developments in the regions: European Union, Eastern Europe, Russia.
  • The Faculty Courses Module (42 ECTS) provides detailed analysis on developments in all of the regions and different policy fields:
    • Courses related to the European Union are designed to give a comprehensive, theoretical and up-to-date overview of EU decision-making processes in law and policy fields;
    • Courses related to Russia's economic, social and political affairs are designed for students who decide to concentrate their studies and research on Russia-related topics. It aims at analysing the realities and policies of the Russian Federation; and
    • A number of courses focus on EU–Russia relations and their role in the global context, which allows for fresh input on the debate regarding the impact of EU and Russia.

Applying and admissions

All paper documents need to sent my mail and if there's some documents that you still miss, send the ones that you have and add the missing ones later. Those graduating in summer 2012, can also apply, but shall submit their most recent Transcript of Records asap.

Documents to be submitted:

Applicants are required to fill in an online application and post the signed application and required documents listed below to the International Student Service: University of Tartu, Ülikooli 18, Tartu 50090, ESTONIA. Please follow the directions given in the online system.

  1. online application
  2. motivation letter - which will be submitted through the online application form*
  3. official copy of the Bachelor's diploma or its equivalent and Diploma Supplement (transcript/mark sheet) in the original language**
  4. official translation of the Bachelor’s diploma and Diploma Supplement  (transcript/mark sheet) into English, translation certified
  5. proof of English language proficiency
  6. copy of the passport page stating the applicant’s personal particulars

*In the motivation letter, please point out:

  1. How is your previous education and working experience (if applicable) linked to the master's programme in EU-Russian Studies?
  2. Describe how your future plans and goals are related to the selected study field?
  3. What are the most interesting research topics for you and in what area would you like to write your master's thesis?

In evaluation, the following criteria will be considered:

  • compatibility of interests, previous education and/or work experience and the issues raised in the motivation letter with the goals of the programme (50 %)
  • analytical and argumentation skills (30%)
  • lucidity and self-expression skills  (20 %)


**Please note that in order to be considered official, all academic transcripts must bear a seal, and a signature of an authorized official. Official documents must be provided from the institution awarding the degree. Academic records certified by notary publics are not official. Documents sent with  an Apostille are official.

NB! Applicants graduating in 2012 and having their diplomas issued later than application deadlines, please send an application form and the most recent official Transcript of Records by the required deadline. Inform the International Student Service when the final diploma will be issued. For detailed information contact the Service.

All applicants will receive confirmation upon receipt of their application and its status. Complete applications will be considered by the Admission Commission and students accepted to the programme will be notified immediately. 

 

Tuition Fees

Tuition fee is EUR 1600/semester and covers tuition and materials. Housing, food, insurance and other living expenses are not covered by the program fee.
